Cabot Circus, Bristol

October 2009 | Bristol Alliance

PJO Archaeology is consultant for the Bristol Alliance who have developed a site over 12ha in extent on the east side of Bristol city centre, known as Cabot Circus. Excavations by Oxford Archaeology and CAPCA, a consortium of Cotswold Archaeology and Pre-Construct Archaeology have revealed remains of the medieval Dominican Friary and of medieval properties on the banks of the river Upper Frome containing both timber and stone structures. There has also been considerable evidence discovered for the expansion of Bristol in the 17th - 18th centuries when the city grew rich on transatlantic trade.

An exhibition of the archaeology of Cabot Circus, created by PJO Archaeology, was shown in Bristol Museum from September 2008 - May 2009 - it can now be seen in the Bristol City Record Office.

CAPCA is now working towards publication of a report on the project which will appear in 2010.
