High Cross, Leicester
October 2009 | Hammerson plc
PJO Archaeology is consultant for Hammerson plc in respect of the High Cross development in Leicester. Archaeological work has been undertaken by University of Leicester Archaeology Services (ULAS) on a series of large multi-period sites in the centre of the Roman and medieval city.
Important discoveries have included a large Roman town house some 50m square with a central courtyard. Adjacent to the frontage of High Cross Street a very substantial stretch of a collapsed Roman wall was found, probably from a public building known as the macellum (market hall). Unusual Roman finds have included two inscribed lead curse tablets. In addition, the medieval church of St Peter has been located along with its cemetery which contained over 1600 burials. Over 200 more medieval burials were found in the churchyard of St Michael's.
ULAS is now working towards publication of a report on the archaeological discoveries at High Cross which will appear in 2010.
