Withernwick Wind Farm

August 2011 | Energie Kontor UK

PJO Archaeology is acting as consultant to Energie Kontor UK Ltd for a wind farm development at Withernwick, East Riding of Yorkshire. This has involved, first of all, preparation of an archaeological desk-top study outlining the archaeological research potential of the site and setting out a mitigation strategy in respect of the impact of the turbines and related structures. The site lies near the Lambwath Mere which has now been drained but formerly attracted activity and settlement from early prehistoric times.

Briefs for geophysical survey and fieldwork were approved  by Humber Archaeology Partnership which advises East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The geophysics was undertaken by GSB Prospection and the excavations are being conducted by Humber Field Archaeology. A Bronze Age cremation burial and ditched enclosures of the late Iron Age - Roman period have so far come to light.
