Commercial Consultancy

PJO Archaeology provides a range of consultancy services to commercial clients who need to take account of archaeological requirements in the development and planning process.

The impact of a new development on archaeological remains is now a material consideration when decisions are taken by local authorities on granting planning permission. Planning control, which includes matters to do with archaeology, is governed by the Town and Country Planning legislation, supplemented in England by government advice in Archaeology and Planning, Planning Policy Guidance Note 16 (PPG16) and equivalents in other parts of Britain.

PPG16 establishes procedures to ascertain the archaeological impact of a development so that a local authority can make an informed decision on how to safeguard archaeological remains. PPG 16 promotes the principle that archaeological remains are a valuable and finite part of the nation’s heritage that should ideally be preserved in situ. However, where this is not possible, preservation by record, through excavation and / or other forms of fieldwork may be required.

PJO Archaeology provides confidential and independent consultancy services to commercial clients which takes account of current legislation and the advice in PPG16 and is in accordance with best practice as promoted by the Institute of Field Archaeologists.
